Living Abroad, Scotland

I’m a better person when I’m tan

Personally, I think I’m a better person when I’m tan. I have a glow, I feel confident and it means I have seen the sun in the last month, which always results in a better attitude about life. But over the last few years, I have had to get used to my white, pasty skin that has developed while living in the UK.

Now I’m from Florida, so I can be a sun snob and I not so subtly put Scotland down all the time about the weather. I really love living here, but the weather is cruel. It’s been raining and snowing all of April, because spring isn’t happening this year.

But I’m trying my very best to refocus my attention towards summer and to be positive about it (insert forced smile here).

In all honesty, I have been trying to think of my favorite things that have to do with summer in Scotland that don’t include sun. So here goes:

  1. It’s light about 20 hours of the day in the heart of summer. Some days if you stay out late enough, you can miss darkness completely. Not that I have ever done that 😉
  2. Suddenly every pub creates a makeshift “outdoor patio”. Which usually consists of one bar stool and a roped fence.
  3. Everyone takes their “taps off”. No joke shirts come off the minute it hits 50 degree weather (fahrenheit, I still can’t think in celsius). I have never seen so many white tummies in my life and although it’s slightly creepy, it’s also highly entertaining.
  4. Walks on the beach only need two layers of clothing instead of three.
  5. Disposable BBQs. These are genius! And on a slightly warmish day, parks are overflowing with a ton of smoke and people lounging in the grass. And nobody ever seems concerned about this being a fire hazard. So just grab another beer and smoke that sausage!
  6. If you don’t like the weather where you are, hop in the car and drive about 10 minutes away and the weather will be completely different.
  7. Festival time! The joy of thousands of drunk people coming together to laugh and wait in long lines for booze.
  8. It’s the only place on earth where you can experience four seasons in one day. That’s just magical.
  9. Switching out your seasonal wardrobe isn’t really a thing because I don’t have to pack away my winter clothes for my summer clothes. Those scarves and wellies stay out all year round, lucky me.
  10. And finally, I don’t have to stress if I don’t have time to get a pedi, because nobody is ever going to see it.

Well, doesn’t that make everyone excited for summer in Scotland?

I love being a tourist in my own city and recently I climbed up Scott monument with Scott. I know it’s confusing, they don’t have much diversity in names around here. But this is the tallest monument dedicated to a writer in the world, Sir Walter Scott. I have a slight fear of heights and I’m a bit claustrophobic so climbing up this was a really good idea. However, check out this view! By the way, that sky is totally a filter.
